The TR15 Road Closed sign is used to communicate that a road, lane or access route is closed to traffic as part of a temporary traffic-management arrangement. It is commonly searched by contractors, municipalities, mines and maintenance teams planning roadworks, emergency closures or controlled access.
A road-closure sign should never be selected or positioned in isolation. The sign code, size, reflective performance, support system and placement must form part of the approved traffic-accommodation plan for the specific site.
What does the TR15 Road Closed sign mean?
TR-series signs are temporary regulatory signs. They communicate instructions or restrictions that apply during a temporary condition such as road construction, maintenance, an incident, a lane closure or another controlled operation.
TR15 informs approaching road users that the affected roadway or route is closed. Depending on the approved plan, it can be supported by advance-warning signs, direction signs, barriers, delineators, cones, lighting and personnel.
Where is a Road Closed sign commonly used?
Typical applications can include:
- Full road closures during construction or maintenance
- Temporary closure of an access road or site entrance
- Emergency closures following an incident or unsafe condition
- Mine, industrial or construction-site traffic control
- Event-related or municipal road closures
- Closures that redirect traffic to an approved detour
The correct treatment depends on the road environment, traffic volumes, operating speeds, visibility, closure duration and the approved traffic-management design.
TR15 is not the same as W410
Buyers sometimes use “road closed sign” to describe different products. TR15 is a temporary regulatory instruction indicating that the road is closed. W410 is a hazard or chevron marker used to provide high-visibility delineation at a dead end or road closure.
These signs have different functions and should not be treated as interchangeable. If a BOQ or drawing specifies only the words “Road Closed,” confirm the required code and sign face with the responsible engineer or road authority before ordering.
You can view the W410 Dead End or Road Closed chevron marker separately.
Information required when requesting a TR15 quotation
For an accurate quotation, provide:
- Sign code: TR15
- Required sign dimensions
- Reflective sheeting grade
- Substrate and material thickness
- Sign face only or complete temporary frame
- Quantity
- Project location and delivery destination
- Relevant BOQ, drawing or traffic-accommodation plan
If the sign will be used with a stand or frame, confirm the project specification and handling requirements. SA Road Signs can supply temporary sign faces and purpose-manufactured reusable frames where specified.
Supporting temporary traffic-management equipment
A planned road closure may require more than signage. Depending on the approved design, supporting equipment can include:
- Advance-warning and direction signs
- Traffic cones and delineators
- Water- or sand-filled barricades
- Warning lights
- Temporary sign frames
- Channelising devices and other site-specific controls

Reflectivity and night-time visibility
Temporary signs must remain conspicuous in the conditions for which they are specified. Reflective sheeting selection should therefore follow the applicable project requirements, traffic environment and approved design.
When requesting a quotation, do not rely only on a general description such as “reflective.” State the specified reflective grade and sign construction so that the quotation can be matched to the project requirements.
Road closure planning and compliance
The contractor or responsible authority must ensure that the complete temporary traffic-management arrangement is designed, approved, installed, inspected and maintained for the duration of the closure. Sign placement, spacing, supports, visibility and removal should follow the approved documentation and applicable requirements.
SA Road Signs manufactures and supplies signage and traffic-safety equipment. Installation and on-site traffic management are handled separately by the appointed contractor.
